NEW DELHI: Equity, currency and derivatives markets will be closed for trading on Thursday, August 19 as the Street and the nation will observe Muharram. Commodity markets will be closed for the morning session but will open in the evening.
The bourses will reopen for trading on August 20, Friday.
On Wednesday, benchmark indices hit fresh record highs in the morning trade but lost momentum at the closing, eventually ending in the red. Bank, financial services along with metals saw some selling.
The 30-share pack Sensex declined 162.78 points or 0.29 per cent to close at 55,629.49. The index traded in a range of over 600 points during the day. Its broader peer NSE Nifty fell 45.75 points or 0.28 per cent to 16,568.85.
Market breadth was in favour of losers as 1,097 stocks ended in the green, while 2,083 names settled with cuts. As many as 207 securities hit 52-week highs, mostly from the smallcap space. Meanwhile, 34 names hit 52-week lows, mostly from the microcap space. About 235 stocks hit upper circuit limits and 390 lower circuit limits.
Wall Street's main indexes slid on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 falling over 1%, after the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's policy meeting last month showed officials felt the employment benchmark for decreasing support for the economy "could be reached this year."
