Oct 19 (The Street Press) – On Thursday, a U.S. Navy ship intercepted three cruise missiles and multiple drones that were launched by a group in Yemen, possibly heading for Israel, according to the Pentagon.

Washington is closely monitoring the situation as tensions rise in the region during the Israel-Hamas conflict, leading to increased concerns about activities by Iran-backed groups.

According to the Pentagon, the USS Carney destroyer was in the northern Red Sea on Thursday when it successfully intercepted the projectiles, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told reporters, “We cannot say for certain what these missiles and drones were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen heading north along the Red Sea, potentially towards targets in Israel.”

An anonymous U.S. official told Reuters that it didn’t seem like the warship was the intended target.

In the past week, the U.S. has deployed a substantial naval presence to the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers, their support ships, and approximately 2,000 Marines.

Although the White House states that there are “no plans or intentions” to use these assets, their presence ensures that U.S. military resources are ready to safeguard national security interests if the need arises. Additionally, the U.S. maintains a network of bases in the Middle East with troops, fighter aircraft, and warships.
