Kyiv, Aug 19 (The Street Press) – A Russian missile hit a central square in the historic city of Chernihiv, Ukraine. Sadly, seven people, including a 6-year-old child, lost their lives, and 90 others were injured in the incident. This information was shared by the interior ministry on Saturday.
As people were heading to church to celebrate a special religious day, the missile struck. The ministry mentioned that among the 90 people wounded, 12 were children, and 10 were police officers.
“A Russian missile hit right in the centre of the city, in our Chernihiv. A square, the polytechnic university, a theatre,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was in Sweden, shared this on Telegram.
He also added that what should have been a regular Saturday turned into a day filled with pain and sorrow due to Russia’s actions.
In a short video that accompanied Zelenskiy’s post, you could see debris spread out in a square in front of the regional drama theatre. Parked cars were badly damaged, and the video briefly displayed a person in a car.
Chernihiv, a city with green streets and ancient churches, is located about 145 km (90 miles) to the north of Kyiv, the capital. The interior ministry reported that the missile strike had destroyed the roof of the drama theatre.
As part of the invasion that started in February the previous year, Russia has targeted Ukrainian cities located away from the front lines using missiles and drones.
In an update from Kyiv’s air force on Saturday, it was revealed that during an overnight strike, the Ukrainian military successfully downed 15 out of the 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones that Moscow had launched.
